FAQs When Working With MarbleAir Architects

At MarbleAir Architects, we understand that hiring an architect can be a complex process. What are the costs involved? What are the processes? How do you get started?

To make sure you have a flawless experience, here are 8 of the most frequently asked questions we receive from prospects.

Can you deliver a project in 12 months?

Unfortunately, there’s no easy answer to this question. The length of a project will depend entirely on how complex the project is and how much work needs to be done.

While some smaller projects can be completed in 12 months, larger projects often require 6 to 12 months just to plan for design, construct drawings, and acquire statutory permissions.

That said, several factors can impact completion time. These include:

1) Preparation

The more prepared you are, the better. We always make sure everything that can be prepared is done so before your project begins. Potential delays can occur when collaborating with other parties. For example, working with consultants, contractors, and suppliers. Contractors usually have busy schedules. Furthermore, statutory approvals take 8 to 10 weeks minimum.

2) Contractor Schedules

Typically, building contractors programme their jobs in December and January. Popular construction companies will often have waiting lists, so if you have a preferred contractor, your work could be set back for a few months.

At MarbleAir, we always endeavour to deliver your projects as soon as possible, ensuring that everything is arranged to prevent any unexpected delays.

Can you manage the project for me?

Of course! Before you start working with us, we will discuss the level of involvement you’d like to have over the project, and the jurisdiction we have on your behalf. This ensures you have as much or as little involvement as you like.

What is the process of working with us?

To begin, we’d start with an initial discovery meeting. This can be completed on-site, through a video call, or through a telephone conversation. During the call, we will discuss your objectives, how you’d like the project to be completed, your budget, and more. The aim here is to understand your project as thoroughly as possible.

After our initial conversation, we will prepare a fee proposal based on your requirements. This will be binding upon your agreement (via a signature). Once signed, we can proceed with the project.

Once we begin, we will keep you informed regarding our progress via every step. If you have any questions or we have any updates, we will communicate with you as soon as possible.

Most of the questions we receive during this phase will involve design and financial decisions. We can guide you through this process or take on any specific requirements you have.

What happens at the initial meeting?

Before we start any project we will have an initial meeting. Here, we can discuss your requirements and make sure we’re a good fit for the job. During the meeting we will discuss your concepts and ideas, as well as give you a breakdown of our experience and how we can help.

Do I need to appoint the other consultants?

No, we can arrange other consultants if required for the project. We have several sub-consultants and collaborators within the market that we have previously worked with.

That said, if you wish to involve a particular consultant, we will first require references. After these have been provided, we will be happy to collaborate with the consultants you or your friends have recommended.

How much will this cost me?

The price of a project will vary depending on the requirements. During our initial discovery meeting, we will give you an estimation based on your project. After this, we offer a fixed fee to prevent unexpected costs from increasing over time. The earlier we can fix this, the better.

Alternatively, we offer a per-hour charge if you need our professional advice.

How can I make the house cost-effective and energy-efficient?

There are many ways to make your house more cost-effective and energy-efficient. These range from simple solutions you can do yourself to more complex jobs that require a professional.

Six of our best recommendations are:

1) Draught-Proofing

Draught-proofing the existing fabric of the house is the first step you should take to effectively reduce energy consumption.

Simply block any unwanted gaps in walls, windows, and doors, to keep cold air out and warm air in. This will make your home more energy efficient and save you money as you won’t need to use the heating as often.

2) Quality insulation

Thermal insulation is one of the best ways to retain heat throughout your home. This reduces the need to keep your heating on for long durations and reduces the possibility of dampness, thus raising the value of your property. Insulation can also keep your home cool during hot summer months, so you don’t need to rely on expensive air conditioners.

3) Smart Meters

Smart meters are simple and cost-effective ways to track the energy you use. They will show you how much energy you’ve used each month, and you can find out how much you spend a day. Using this information, you can reduce waste, manage your energy usage, and save money every month. Certain smart controls also give you more control of your heating. For example, using an app to adjust timers, which rooms the heating comes on in, and more.

4) Double (Or Triple) Glazing

Poorly performing windows can cause your property to lose heat throughout the cold winter months. While installing double or triple glazing may appear expensive at first, you’ll save your investment and more in the future. You’ll also enjoy benefits such as less noise from outside and better protection from outside elements such as strong winds.

5) Use Air Source Heat Pumps And Solar Panels

Although air source heat pumps and solar panels used to be expensive, they’ve become significantly more affordable over the last decade. Though you’ll have to make an initial investment, you could save thousands as a result. Furthermore, there are grants available to help reduce the initial investment. Both options can be paired with an initial energy assessment to ensure you maximize your savings.

6) Ensure You Have The Right Heating

The type of heating you use should be based on the room. For example, if you have a smaller room, then a traditional radiator is a good option. However, for larger rooms, underfloor heating could be more efficient and save you money.

I always wanted to have a workshop. Can you help with this?

Of course. We will treat this like any other project by starting with an initial discovery call. Here, you can share your ideas and inspiration so we can create and tailor a design that fits around your property. The more information you can offer, the better. But don’t worry. We can also help you to design your workshop if you’re unsure where to start.

Our services cover both outbuildings and rooms within your home. If you’re unsure if you have the right planning permission, contact us and we can help.
